it’s time to
can the trash

Toss no mas New Mexico! It’s time to clean up the scene. This is our home. Let’s not trash it. It’s that simple. All trash goes in the can. If you have a load on your truck, tie it and tarp it. Littering costs us $3.5 million a year. Think of what else we could do with all that money. We all need to pitch in to clean up our beautiful state for ourselves and our visitors. Let’s keep New Mexico beautiful. Today and mañana.

trash facts

what it takes

to pick up trash in New Mexico annually:

how you can help

tie it

Know the ropes. Always tie down your load properly. That means securing large items with bungee cords, netting, ratchet straps and rope. Tie loose items together and keep lighter weight objects at the bottom of your load. Make sure it’s tight and nothing can move around. Your cargo must be able to withstand high winds, like the kind we get in New Mexico. And be sure to securely tie trash bags to prevent spills and keep litter where it belongs.

tarp it

Make sure your tarp covers the entire load on your truck. Tightly bind the tarp and secure the ends with bungee cords or heavy-duty rope. Double check to make sure everything is secure, and then check again shortly after beginning your trip to make sure nothing moved around and that your load is still tight and secure. Don’t drop your load on the road.

pick it up

Do you see litter that you can safely pick up? Then please can the trash, even if it’s not yours. Did you know that people are much more likely to litter if they see an environment that is already littered? That also means people will be less likely to litter when we keep our roads free of trash. If we don’t mess it up, others won’t either. If we clean it up, others will too.

avoid a fine

Littering is a crime punishable with a fine of $300. Always can your trash and do your part to keep New Mexico beautiful.

put PPE in its place

Discarded masks, gloves and wipes on our roads and parking lots are an environmental and health hazard. Make sure to toss your PPE in the regular trash, securing it in a tied garbage bag first. These items are considered contaminated and not suitable for recycling. When traveling, carry a bag or container with you to store your PPE until you can find a trash can nearby.
